The Shigmo festival, is the Goan counterpart of holi. The celebrations of this festival go on for several days of fun and efferversence. It is celebrated at the start of spring on the full moon day of the month of Phalgun which corresponds roughly to March. In the recent past, the practice of having floats on parade at the time of Shigmo celebrations, depicting various themes from Hindu mythology has begun.

A continuation of the Shigmo celebrations is the gulaal, a riot of color around the Shantadurga Temple at Fatorpa, around 22kms. from Margao. This throw of colour in a riotous revelry also takes place at the peak of the festive season at Zambaulim, around the Sri Damodar Temple in Sanguem.
