Our Lady of Merces Church in Colva, popularly known as the Colva Church is also called ‘Nossa Senhora das Merces Igreja em Colva, Goa’ in Portuguese. The Colva Church was initially a chapel was founded in 1630.It was affiliated to the Benaulim Parish. Our lady of Merces Church got its separate status as an independent Parish in 1635.

Infant Jesus is venerated in this church with great devotion and reverence. The feast of infant Jesus, more widely known as theFama is celebrated with much devotion. The Fama marks the beginning of the novenas leading up to the feast day. The miraculous statue of infant Jesus, is kept for veneration in October during the Fama.

Legend states that the statue of Infant Jesus was found off the coast of Mozambique in the 17th century by some shipwrecked sailors led by a Jesuit missionary, Fr. Bento Ferreira. On his posting to Colva in 1668, Fr. Ferreira had grandly enthroned the statue and then started the Fama, held annually which draws large number of devotees till this day.
